Aksum University hosts curriculum review for two PhD programs in agriculture
The PhD programs under review are Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition as well as Soil and Water Conservation Engineering.
Acting President of Academic Affairs Dr. Gebremedhn Mezgebe appreciated the college and department stating “it is the second exemplary PhD program we are launching next to Mathematics”.
He adds “we are launching these programs based on the national development priorities so as to strengthen the effective and efficient utilization of our enormous natural resources; water and soil to mention some.”
Dr. Gebreyesus Brhane, Dean of College of Agriculture, states that as the economy is dependent on agriculture, utilizing knowledge, skill and attitude in soil and water related fields is important.
In his presentation on the result of the national assessment Dr. Gebreyesus found that 95% of the respondents are highly demanding for PhD program in the field.
External Reviewer, Dr. Bereket Haileselassie from Tigray Agricultural Research Institute states that the opening of the PhD program will serve as a center of excellence for agriculture.
He also comments that the research horizon for the program shall allow diverse academic, applied and basic researches.
Professor Mitiku Haile from Mekelle University based on his evaluation states that the curriculum is based on the national and international standards.
He further comments that tasks like developing thematic research areas and resource mobilization for the realization of the program is expected.
In the closing remark Head of Shire Campus, Dr. Assen Ibrahim, says “Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition as well as Soil and Water Conservation Engineering PhD programs we have launched today are the first at PhD level in Ethiopia.”
The programs will be launched in the next year after the approval of concerned bodies is granted.
