Overview

Aksum University Library was established in 2007. It has four branch campus libraries and six additional units.  The Library has around 70,004 academic books, 11,308 copies of books, 6267 fictions, periodicals, and thesis. Moreover, the library provides periodical services for its users. Its collection is for all colleges, students and staff, and any authorized user.

Mission

The mission of Aksum University’s Library is to provide relevant information about the resources and modern services in support of the research, teaching, and learning needs of the university community for the creation of competent and highly qualified graduates for the country.To achieve this mission, Aksum University Library provides 7 days per week/24 hour services for its customers except the national holidays noted on the calendar.

Objectives

To achieve the mission and objectives of the University, the University Library set deliberately to work out the following objectives:

  • Develop the library and information resources provision policies and strategies in consultation with key stakeholders;
  • Develop a plan for the future development of library services, and the strategic drivers that will influence the University’s decisions about investment in them;
  • Collect, manage, coordinate, and catalog a wide range of books, monographs, journals, and reference materials in the constituent libraries;
  • Organize and maintain electronic libraries at the centre and on various campuses and make them available to users;
  • Plan the capital and recurrent resource requirements and provide budget management for the University Libraries, to ensure that information services effectively support University teaching, research and community services;
  • Provide risk management and disaster recovery management for University Library facilities;
  • Ensure the proper acquisition, processing of library and information resources pertinent to teaching, learning, and research of the University;
  • Ensure the efficient use of library resources;
  • Ensure the development and protection of electronic libraries through digitization of existing print resources and licensing of electronic resources and make them accessible to the end-users;
  • Coordinate and follow-up the formulation, implementation, and monitoring of the mission, aims and objectives of library and information services;
  • Develop the library and information resources provision policies and strategies in consultation with key stakeholders;
  • Identify and build a database of suppliers of books, periodicals, and other sources of information, and develop criteria for selection of suppliers of books, periodicals, and other sources of information and have the same approved by the University body concerned; and
  • Enter into partnership arrangements, with due regard to University policies, rules and procedures, to develop and support information-literate learners who can discover, access,  and use information effectively, for academic success, research, and lifelong learning.

  • The Technical Processing Section: – consists of the Acquisitions Unit and Cataloging & Classification Unit.

The Acquisitions Unit is responsible for collecting all materials of the library gained by purchasing, donation, and exchange.

The Cataloging & classification Unit: – has primary responsibility for processing library materials (collections). These activities include ordering, classifying, and cataloging, preparing materials for the library.

Library Policy/Regulations

Opening Hours

Monday – Sunday      24 hours

The library is closed on public holidays only.

 

Discipline

  • All users must observe total silence in the library and its environments at all times
  • All users are required to show their IDs at entrance to the library
  • Use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited in the library
  • All bags, cases, folders, etc. must be left in the luggage area inside the library
  • Users are not allowed to leave their baggage overnight in the library. The library shall not take any responsibility for loss of personal property or books already signed out to a user
  • Users are not allowed to log in using their passwords at the search computers or to access the internet from there. Do not shut down the search computer after your search.
  • All users are required to show all items to the librarian before leaving the library
  • No student is allowed to enter the circulation area without the consent of the library staff
  • Anyone caught marking, defacing, or mutilating books or any other library material will be expected to pay for the material with the most current edition of the same
  • Good order must be observed in the library at all times, for example, placing of feet on the furniture, eating and drinking, smoking, sleeping, etc. will not be allowed
  • Group discussions are not allowed in the library
  • Use of sound equipment like radios, walkmans, cell phones, etc. is strictly prohibited in the library and its environs
  • Seats in the library may not be reserved
  • No library equipment may be moved, modified, or tampered with without permission from the librarian

Borrowing procedure

  • Borrowing period is strictly from 8:00 am to 12:00 am (morning) and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm (afternoon) weekdays (Monday to Friday)
  • A user must be a registered student in the current term to be able to borrow library materials
  • All students must present their college ID before borrowing any library materials
  • Library materials may not be removed from the library unless the library staff has properly issued them out
  • Students are allowed to borrow a maximum of 3 books for a period of 10days
  • All borrowed materials must be returned on or before the due date
  • Students are not allowed to borrow books on behalf of others or transfer borrowed materials to other students
  • Students with overdue materials and overdue fines will not be allowed to use the library services
  • All reserve materials must be returned at the specified time

The following materials can only be used within the library

  • Reference books
  • Newspapers
  • Journals and magazines

Damage/ loss of library materials

  • All users will be held responsible for any damage or loss of library materials in their possession and will be required to meet the cost of replacement and processing
  • Users must ensure that the books they borrow are in good condition to avoid being held responsible for any damages noted while returning the books
  • Lost books must be reported to the librarian immediately

Overdue charges/ fines

  • General collection materials1-7 days 0.50 birr per day, above 7 days 1 birr per day
  • Reserve materials 1-7 days 0.50 birr per day, above 7 days 1 birr per day

Exclusion from the use of the library

  • The library committee shall have the power to suspend or exclude from the use of the library any user who disregards the library rules and regulations
  • The library staff have the right to ask students to leave the library if they are behaving inappropriately or causing disturbance to other users

Admission

The following people are allowed to use the library:

  • All registered students of the University
  • All staff at the University
  • Known members of the community and those with a genuine need have limited access to the library

Borrowing

All registered students, colleges, and staff have borrowing privileges in the library. Other people may use the library but do not have borrowing privileges.

Loan periods: The length of time that books may be borrowed is as follows:

Students: three books for ten days

Teachers: five books for a semester

Other staff: two books for ten days

  • Damage and loss of library materials

Any user who causes damage to or loss of any library materials or other library property will be charged for replacement costs. Marking of books and other library materials will be regarded as damage.

  • Theft of library materials

Students caught stealing library materials will be seen by the AKU Discipline Committee.
